Week2 :Musical structure and analysis

The structure of a musical work is typically composed of several different parts, each serving a specific function and expressing particular emotion.Common sections of a music structure include the Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, Outro and Interlude. These parts can be freely combined and varied according to the artist’s creativity and there is no fixed pattern. In my view, creators often need to flexibly adjust these structural elements based on the emotional flow and narrative needs of the song to create a unique auditory experience.

If the structure of pop music is as diverse as the above, the structure of electronic music is slightly easier to remember, and you can use ABCD to remember. A song I’ve been enjoying listening to lately is Fractures(1) by electrosound producer ILLENIUM. The structure of the song is intra-verse (A) -Build up (B) -Drop/Chrous (C) –Verse (A) -Build up (B) -Drop/Chorus (C) -Outro.

(Intro) The composition commences with subdued synthesizer tones and a straightforward melodic line, progressively engaging the listener in the song’s emotive ambiance. This segment is typically brief, swiftly transitioning into an initial verse.(Verse) The entrance of Nevve’s vocals, accompanied by warm chords and rhythmic percussion, tamarks this phase. The orchestration here is deliberately minimalist, primarily emphasizing the lyrical content and melody.(TransportationChorus) Here, the dynamic intensity begins to escalate, with both synthesizers and percussion incrementally intensifying, thereby generating a buildup of tension and anticipation leading into the chorus.(Chorus) Representing the zenith of the piece, this section is characterized by a denser and more vigorous deployment of electronic components.ILLENIUM employs his hallmark robust synthesizers and potent bass, coupled with vigorous drum patterns, to forge an emotional crescendo.Subsequently, the composition revisits the (Verse), (Aculine-Chorus) and (Chorus).(Outro) The conclusion of the song is marked by a gradual diminution, typically reverting to more simplistic and tranquil musical elements, thus providing a consummate closure to the musical narrative.

ILLENIUM-Fractures(1)

I went to listen to some of his other songs and I noticed something very interesting. In a large majority of ILLENIUM songs, he does these epic emotional “pre “break” breakdowns, often with strings and other instruments, before he goes into the build-up and drop.Obviously, there are tons of ways to do this, changing up tempo, rhythm, sound design, velocity, percussion, etc.
